Gen-Bio Lab

Since 2019 SDEV has partnered with the University of Detroit Mercy’s College of Engineering and Science‘s Gen-Bio lab to conduct research in Cadillac Urban Gardens. Lead by Dr. Victor Carmona, UDM and SDEV collaborate on ways to improve crop yield and production in the garden by taking a research-based approach to observing vegetative health. Through biochemical and biogeographical considerations of photosynthesis paired with the environmental issues identified by SDEV, UDM characterizes plant stomatal morphology to determine external factors leading to water stress. In turn, SDEV has been able to implement changes to promote healthier and more abundant crop yields for its Southwest Detroit residents.
